What do brandy and cognac have to do with Napoleon? This question may seem strange, but it makes sense if we look at history. Brandy is the generic name for alcoholic beverages distilled from wine. Cognac is a type of brandy that comes from the Cognac region of France and must meet certain quality criteria. Napoleon Bonaparte was a great lover of cognac and often took barrels of this drink with him on his war campaigns. He believed that cognac strengthened his health and morale. Some cognac producers, such as Courvoisier, have been calling their product “Napoleon Brandy” in honor of the emperor since the 19th century. Brandy and cognac therefore have a lot in common with Napoleon, both in terms of history and taste.
If the name and likeness of Napoleon appear on the label of a brandy or cognac, it is neither a brand nor a name. Napoleońskie or Napoleons have the right to be called brandies or cognacs aged for at least six years. Napoleon is therefore not a brand, but a class meaning that the age of the youngest eau de vie, from which cognac or brandy is composed, must exceed the aforementioned six years, i.e. Napoleon is an age class between VSOP (aged at least four years) and XO (minimum ten years).
