The characteristic taste of CTRARK is due to the enrichment of oak flakes. Thanks to this, the front grain distillate tastes as if it was aged in oak barrels. As a type of vodka, Starka owes its graceful name to a specific aging process – it is a long-aging vodka known for centuries in Poland, Lithuania and Belarus. Starka is most often produced from rye and, according to tradition, non-rectified spirit, like classic grain vodka, which is then aged in oak barrels, preferably after wine, but not necessarily, with a small addition of linden or apple leaves. Sometimes small amounts of apples, pears, cherries or other fruits were also added to the starka. Starka has a characteristic amber color and a rich aroma. It usually has around 40-50% alcohol content and is served as an aperitif or digestif. Produced since the 15th century, it is considered the most noble and at the same time the most mysterious native liquor. It is to the stark additives that it owes its unusual taste. The beautiful golden-brown color of the starka is, in turn, the result of the reaction of the alcohol with the barrel in which it was stored.
The production process is similar to that used in the case of whiskey and in Poland it is kept secret by each distillery. In the past, the secrets of Starka production were passed from father to son. There was a tradition according to which, after the birth of a son, the family would bury a barrel of vodka, which the adult son dug up only on the occasion of his wedding. Starka has a rich and expressive taste, which gains in depth and aroma over time. Stark vodkas are labeled by age, which can range from 10 to 50 years. Nothing could be more wrong. Starka is an arch-Polish vodka, and the name written in Cyrillic is only a requirement of the tsarist partitioning administration.
The Russians, moreover, assimilated Starka from the Poles. Not only the name, but also the symbolism of the Koneser starka label comes from the tsarist times. The crown on the label means that the vodka is produced in a distillery under imperial jurisdiction according to an approved traditional recipe.
