The history of grapefruit vodka dates back to the 18th century, when merchants from Western Europe began importing citrus fruits from Mediterranean countries. Among them was grapefruit, which gained popularity due to its refreshing taste and healing properties. Some say that the first grapefruit vodka was produced by a Polish nobleman, Jan Potocki, who lived in Spain and experimented with the distillation of various fruits. Others attribute the invention to Russian chemist Dmitry Mendeleev, who reportedly added grapefruit juice to his vodka to reduce its density and improve its quality.
